Dr. McCool is an associate at McCarter & English, LLP and has over 10 years of experience in intellectual property law.

Dr. McCool’s practice primarily involves intellectual property matters pertaining to the life sciences space, including specific fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and medical devices.  Dr. McCool has extensive experience in the preparation of patent applications and their prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), especially in technologies that include antibodies, engineered cells, photochemical tissue bonding, gene therapy, medical diagnostics, therapeutic proteins, fluorescent proteins, vaccines, structurally fortified proteins, microbial and cellular expression systems, lipid-based delivery vehicles, siRNA and RNA interference therapeutics, cardiac stents, and plastics and adhesives. 

In addition, Dr. McCool’s practice includes counseling clients on planning and managing effective patent filing strategies with a view towards protecting their key technological business interests in both the U.S. and in foreign jurisdictions.  Dr. McCool also provides advice and counseling to assist clients with their due diligence investigations in connection with various transactions, investments, and litigation, including providing assessments as to patentability, freedom-to-operate, patent infringement, and patent validity.  Besides his experience with patent prosecution before the USPTO, Dr. McCool also has experience with other USPTO proceedings, including patent reexaminations, reissues, and interferences, as well as providing assistance to clients with opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office.  Dr. McCool also has experience supporting litigation before Federal Courts in connection with various patent infringement law suits, including pharmaceutical patent disputes under the Hatch-Waxman Act.

Dr. McCool is co-inventor on U.S. Patent No. 6,835,820, which relates to his dissertation research.
