Wilmington, Del. (May 22, 2012) - McCarter & English LLP is pleased to announce that Thomas A. Stevens, Assistant General Counsel, Global IP Litigation, at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and formerly a senior deputy attorney general in Delaware’s Department of Justice, has joined the firm as a partner in the Intellectual Property and Information Technology Practice.
Mr. Stevens will specialize in Hatch-Waxman patent infringement actions relating to pharmaceutical and biotechnology products and other litigation matters. He will be based in the firm’s Wilmington office.
“Tom’s broad range of experience managing complex patent litigation for pharmaceutical companies as well as working in private practice and with the attorney general’s office will be a great asset for our clients,” said Michael P. Kelly, a litigator in McCarter’s Wilmington office and chairman of the firm's executive committee. “He’s an exceptional lawyer and experienced litigator whom I have known for a long time, and I’m pleased to have him join the firm.”
At AstraZeneca, Mr. Stevens served as senior legal manager of the company’s ANDA patent litigation cases and other cases involving the company’s best-selling drugs in the United States, Canada, and other global markets. He previously served as a senior patent litigation counsel at GlaxoSmithKline, and he worked in the patent litigation group at Connolly, Bove, Lodge & Hutz LLP.
During his time with Delaware’s Office of the Attorney General, Mr. Stevens served in several positions, including deputy attorney general in the Trial Unit, unit head of the Litigation & Enforcement Unit, and Director of the Consumer Protection Unit. He led numerous complex criminal prosecutions, including white-collar crime, consumer fraud, deceptive trade, and antitrust matters, in which he managed teams of deputies attorney general and investigators.
