Zane Riester focuses his practice in the areas of product liability litigation and complex litigation with an emphasis on pharmaceutical and medical device defense. Mr. Riester regularly appears in court with respect to complex motions and Daubert challenges. Mr. Riester has represented a wide variety of pharmaceutical clients, including manufacturers of hormone therapies, cox-2 inhibitors, atypical antipsychotics, and allergy medications. His medical device experience includes orthopedic products, surgical instruments, and ophthalmological products.

Mr. Riester also has extensive experience in the defense and coordination of mass torts/class actions involving product liability and consumer fraud claims in both state and federal court, including cases alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) as well as New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act and Truth-in-Consumer Contract, Warranty and Notice Act (TCCWNA). As a result, Mr. Riester is particularly well-versed in e-discovery and document preservation obligations. He has counseled clients of various sizes in the coordination and implementation of data retention protocols and managed multiple, simultaneous, complex document reviews.  

Mr. Riester is Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Product Liability and Mass Tort Section. His publications include, "Science Sooner: Moving Daubert to an Earlier Stage of Litigation", (co-author) Daubert On-Line (2009) and "The Viability of Medical Monitoring Class Actions" (co-author) For the Defense (July 2009), among others. He also has contributed to a variety of continuing legal education programs of relevance to product manufacturers.

Before coming to McCarter & English, Mr. Riester worked at Hughes Hubbard and Reed in New York City where he was involved in a variety of high profile pharmaceutical litigations. Mr. Riester received his Juris Doctorate from Fordham University School of Law, where he served as the Managing Editor of the Fordham Moot Court Board and the captain of Fordham's constitutional law moot court team that won the 2002 William B. Spong, Jr. National Invitational Moot Court Tournament.
