Eugene M. Haring, Former Chairman Of Mccarter & English, Has Died

Eugene M. Haring
, one of New Jersey's most accomplished lawyers, who served as Chairman of McCarter & English, LLP for 15 years, has died. He was 82.
Mr. Haring was Chairman of McCarter and English from 1982 to 1997. He was also one of New Jersey's top litigators. He successfully represented a wide range of clients in disputes involving issues such as procedure, antitrust, contracts, damages, insurance, unfair competition and trade regulation, real estate, products liability, negligence and constitutional issues. Long a proponent of alternative dispute resolution, he remained at McCarter & English after 1997 as Of Counsel until his death, conducting mediations and arbitrations. He served on many state and federal mediation boards, including the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Mediation Program.
Mr. Haring grew up in Summit, NJ. He attended Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude having served in the Navy immediately after World War II. He attended Harvard Law School and after graduation started at McCarter & English in 1953 as a summer clerk. He spent his entire career with the firm.
"Gene was an exceptional person and a great lawyer and we are all saddened by his passing," said Drew Berry, the Chairman of the Firm, "He played an essential role in building McCarter & English into the state's largest law firm and he inspired all of us at the firm to strive to meet the highest professional and ethical standards of legal practice. We will miss him as an exceptional mentor, a valued colleague and a dear friend."
Mr. Haring served in prominent positions for many organizations. He was Chancellor for the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey from 1983 to 1994 and from 1999 to 2007. He served on the visiting committee for Rutgers Law School - Newark from 1994 to 2000. He was a life fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a life member of the American Law Institute and a member emeritus of the New Jersey State Bar Association.
Mr. Haring died peacefully on June 4 in Princeton, NJ, following a short illness. He is survived by his wife Janet Marshall Haring, his niece, Amy Newell, and his nephews, James and Christopher Nichols. Services will be held at the Trinity Church, Princeton, NJ on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either the University Medical Center at Princeton, 253 Witherspoon Street, Princeton, New Jersey, 08540 or SAVE Animal Shelter, 900 Herrontown Road, Princeton, New Jersey, 08540.
