Genevieve Halpenny focuses on obtaining patents for clients in the chemical and biotechnology industries. Her primary areas of experience include drafting, filing, and prosecution of US and foreign patent applications covering small molecule drugs, industrial chemicals, electrochemical processes, polymers, and inventions at the intersection of chemistry and biology. Genevieve's practice includes performing freedom to operate, patentability, and patent portfolio analysis. Genevieve has also helped clients monetize their patents through licensing agreements and enforcement, including litigation.

Before joining McCarter & English, Genevieve advised clients for an intellectual property boutique in Orange County, California. In law school, she was an editor of the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review. As a visiting student at University of California, Irvine School of Law, Genevieve received the Faculty award in Business Associations (private companies), the Dean’s Award in Advanced Intellectual Property, and the Dean’s Award in the Environmental Law Clinic. Her technical background includes research in chemistry labs as both an undergraduate and graduate student. Genevieve’s work sought to decrease side effects of a chemotherapy agent using dendrimer polymers and to improve wound healing using light-activated drugs embedded in hydrogels. In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors, running and hiking in beautiful places.
