Scott Smedresman is a partner at McCarter & English LLP. He primarily represents early and growth stage technology companies in structuring, formation, financing, intellectual property, licensing, technology and data matters, and exits. In addition, Scott represents clients in disputes regarding technology and IP, both in and out of court.

Scott works with companies through the full technology lifecycle, from structuring early stage companies, closing financings, planning IP strategy, developing and launching products, building customers and scale, acquiring technology assets and ultimately through exit. He is experienced in working with startups as they scale, routinely negotiating customer deals and strategic partnerships on behalf of these companies opposite Fortune 500 companies.

In his dispute resolution practice, Scott commonly represents clients in technology and intellectual property cases and claims. He has litigated these issues in both state and federal courts around the country, at both trial and appellate levels, including cases involving data breaches, trademark and copyright infringement, patent claims, rights of publicity claims and technology implementation failures.

In addition to direct client representation, Scott works on policy and industry activities in the technology community. He has lectured at a university and graduate level, and has served on various working groups of the Application Developers Alliance. He has been a selection judge and mentor for Venture for America, and has devoted pro bono service to non-profit companies in the space.

Scott routinely works in a mentorship or educator capacity with accelerators and similar programs, as well as other organizations in the space, including the Columbia Startup Lab, Venture for America and the VFA Accelerator, the NY Enterprise Sales Meetup, cofound/harlem, and the NJ Tech Meetup, among others.
