Dr. Steven J. Miller’s twelve-year experience as a practicing general surgeon provides him with a unique perspective as a patent attorney. In addition to his background in the biomedical sciences, Steven regularly leverages his extensive clinical knowledge and experience on behalf of his clients from the perspective of an end-user.

Steven’s practice has focused on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, with emphasis in the medical device and biotechnology space. He works with both established and startup medical device and biotech companies and has experience researching existing biomedical technologies to define the current state of the art and other due diligence activities, including preparation of patentability and freedom to operate opinions. Steven’s experience also includes strategic management of patent portfolios; preparation and prosecution of trademark registrations; representing clients in federal district court, state court, and administrative bodies of the USPTO; negotiation and drafting of license and other transactional documents, and assisting clients with enforcement of existing trademarks and copyrights.

Prior to joining the firm and while attending the Arizona Summit Law School in Phoenix, Steven worked as an advocate for over ten thousand federal healthcare employees in the Indian Health Service as the National Business Manager of the IHS National Council of the Laborers’ International Union. In this role, he directed and participated in litigation and settlement of individual and class actions involving $millions in damages.

His law school honors include work as a managing and staff editor of the Phoenix Law Review, appointment as the student representative to the Faculty Curriculum Committee, the Order of the Quill, and recipient of the Raul Castro and PSL Merit scholarships.
