Prosecuting dishonest officials in New Jersey has never been a simple task. According to Bob Mintz, former NJ prosecutor and partner at McCarter & English, corruption cases are always challenging for prosecutors because they typically involve high profile defendants who may otherwise be well regarded by their constituents. He states that the U.S. Supreme Court made prosecuting political corruption cases “much more difficult after McDonnell,” referring to McDonnell v. United States, in which former Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell was appealed over convictions of honest services fraud and Hobbs Act extortion.
