The McCarter & English summer associate program for law students is a springboard into a promising career. As a summer associate, you will have the opportunity to experience life at a leading law firm, gain meaningful legal experience, and make authentic connections.
Our ten-week program typically starts on the Wednesday after Memorial Day. If you would like to be considered for a 2L position in our 2026 summer program, please send your resume, cover letter, writing sample and law school transcript to the attention of Christine Lydon, Chief Human Resources Officer, at recruiting@mccarter.com.
(Applications for our 2026 1L program will not be accepted until January of 2026.)
Real Experience
McCarter’s collaborative culture provides you with real, hands-on experience early on in your career. Working in small teams, you will have the opportunity to do everything a practicing lawyer does—from participating in client meetings to working on all stages of deals and litigation.
Pro Bono Opportunities
As part of our commitment to giving back, we offer all lawyers unlimited billable credit for pro bono hours. This holistic approach celebrates the deep ties to our community, and provides different ways in which summer associates can get involved.
Equal Employment Opportunity
As an Equal Opportunity employer, McCarter & English, LLP offers all individuals equal opportunity for employment and advancement based on their ability and without regard to race, religion, color, sex, affectional or sexual orientation, civil union, domestic partnership status, gender identity and expression, learning disability, age, national origin, ancestry, marital status, familial status, genetic information, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, veteran’s status, or other classification or characteristics protected by federal, state or local law. This policy governs all aspects of employment, including selection, job assignment, compensation, discipline, termination, and access to benefits and training. In addition, the Firm will make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with known disabilities unless doing so would result in an undue hardship.
Training and Mentors
Training is the foundation of our summer associate program. You will receive professional guidance on legal writing, building client relationships, and other key aspects of starting a successful career as a lawyer. A partner and an associate will help guide you every step of the way—their mentorship will help you forge lasting relationships with peers and clients both in and out of the office.
