COVID-19 made evident weaknesses in the medical supply chain as health systems were left without adequate supplies, including masks, gloves, gowns, and other important personal protective equipment. Ronald Leibman, McCarter partner and head of the Transportation, Logistics & Supply Chain Management practice, cautions that best practices currently in place “will not in the short term eliminate the US medical device [industry’s] dependence on overseas suppliers such as China” and that “creating efficiencies and redundancies will [minimize] or eliminate supply chain disruptions, and assure that hospitals and healthcare providers do not face shortages of critical machines again.”
