The Hon. Judge Jose Linares (Ret.), Chair of McCarter & English’s Alternative Dispute Resolution practice, received the Estrella del Condado de Essex (Stars of Essex County) Award during Essex County New Jersey’s 2026 Latino Heritage Celebration. The award recognizes his outstanding leadership, distinguished career, and longstanding commitment to public service.
A retired Chief Judge of the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, Judge Linares has more than 40 years of experience spanning judicial service, private practice, and business leadership. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for resolving complex disputes through the insight and judgment gained as both a federal judge and trial lawyer.
Judge Linares made history as the first Hispanic Chief Judge of the US District Court for the District of New Jersey and the first Cuban-born federal district court chief judge in the United States. Beyond his legal career, he remains active in civic and nonprofit organizations, supports educational and youth-focused initiatives, and serves on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Audit Committee of Liberty Bank of New Jersey.
Reflecting on the recognition, Judge Linares credited his family’s sacrifices and the values that have guided his career. “I am proud of my accomplishments as a judge, but I am most proud of my family and the sacrifices made by my parents,” he said during the celebration.
