Legal Services Corporation’s Board of Directors honored McCarter & English with a Pro Bono Service Award, in recognition of the firm’s commitment to shrinking the justice gap. Nominated by one of our pro bono partners, Essex-Newark Legal Services, McCarter is recognized as a critical partner in addressing unmet housing and other civil legal needs, and a leader in establishing tenant right to counsel in the City of Newark. The legal aid organization also recognized McCarter for creating its Pro Bono Fellowship for the City of Newark, a full-time attorney position designed to assist the overwhelming number of low-income tenants facing eviction without access to counsel.
Our lawyers dedicate tens of thousands of hours annually to providing pro bono services. “We view pro bono service as a necessary component of our practice of law. It is very much who we are as a firm,” said Michelle Pallak, McCarter’s Pro Bono Partner. “We commend the Legal Service Corporation’s vital role in serving low-income people throughout the country, and we are proud to partner with Essex-Newark Legal Services to serve our neighbors in Newark and beyond.”
