Charges against a demonstrator who shot his attacker during a rally in Newton, Massachusetts, will be dismissed, allowing him to avoid trial on an assault and battery charge. According to court records, Scott Hayes will have the charges dropped upon completion of pretrial probation. The judge imposed a temporary suspension of the Hayes’ license to carry, and required him to take an online course on civil discourse, among other conditions. McCarter partner and former federal prosecutor Glenn MacKinlay, who represented the Hayes, told NBC10 Boston “This has been a long journey, but we remained confident throughout that the evidence would show Hayes acted in self-defense– and that’s exactly what has happened.”
