Diverse group of top rainmakers contribute to new milestones in revenue
McCarter & English, LLP has achieved a third year of record growth under the leadership of Joseph Lubertazzi, Jr., Chairman of the Executive Committee, Joseph T. Boccassini, Firmwide Managing Partner, and John Brefach, Chief Operating Officer. The firm celebrated a new record in both gross revenue and revenue per lawyer, and a second consecutive year in which profits per equity partner exceeded $1 million.
“This was a tremendous year for McCarter, not just in revenue, but also in the diverse makeup of our top rainmakers and leadership. Our lawyers and staff throughout the Firm have worked diligently to position us for further growth over the long term. We are very proud of what we have accomplished together this past year,” said Lubertazzi, who is starting his fourth year as Chairman.
“We invested in ourselves this year, recruiting world class lawyers at every level and expanding our capabilities in both subject matter and geographic footprint as we opened new offices in Indianapolis and Miami – two states where we see great opportunity,” added Boccassini. “That investment has also extended to a wide array of health and wellness programs for our attorneys and staff, as well as meaningful training initiatives designed to foster collaboration and advance the professional development of our colleagues across the firm.”
The firm points to several achievements over the last year:
- The addition of 14 new lateral partners across seven offices, including former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Jaynee LaVecchia.
- The election of 10 new partners.
- The strength of the Firm’s women leaders:
- Mary Gabriel was named Deputy Firmwide Managing Partner, focusing on governance and strategic growth initiatives
- Six of the Firm’s top 10 top rainmakers are women or diverse partners
- Six of the Firm’s 13 office managing partners are women partners
- Five of the Firm’s 12 practice group leaders are women partners
- Expanded capabilities in Products Liability, Real Estate, Appellate Practice, Data Privacy, Government Contracts, Energy, Intellectual Property and Government Affairs.
- A sustained focus on diversity, equity and inclusion through various initiatives, including the Firm’s 1L diversity program. McCarter was one of only 43 US-based law firms named to Bloomberg Law’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Framework.
- An enhanced wellness program for all employees with a focus on new physical and mental healthcare benefits.
“We operate with a growth mindset and have a very exciting year ahead,” Lubertazzi added. “We remain focused on expanding our service capabilities and continuing our strong lateral growth, and we are constantly improving our technologies and infrastructure to better serve our clients and communities.”
Commitment to the Community and Social Justice
Throughout 2022, McCarter continued its long legacy of public service, providing critical pro bono services to support the legal needs of low-income and marginalized individuals. Firmwide, McCarter lawyers dedicated approximately 18,000 hours to pro bono work, averaging roughly 53 hours per attorney. Many were recognized for their deep commitment to pro bono work.
The firm was recognized as the 2021 Law Firm Mission Partner by The Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program, as the 2022 Law Firm Leader for Justice by the Greater Hartford Legal Aid Foundation, and as the 2022 Outstanding Pro Bono Award recipient by Veterans Legal Services.
“As a firm, we have committed ourselves to impactful pro bono and community service work, designed to address the root causes of the inequities so many of our neighbors confront on a daily basis,” said Lubertazzi. “This commitment is an essential part of our identity as a firm, and I am extremely proud of how our lawyers dedicate themselves to helping those in need and advocating for those who would not otherwise have a voice.”
