Ryan Magee was quoted in the Law360 article “NJ Towns Leave Little Room for Cannabis Law’s Social Goals” on March 15, 2022. With another round of license applications opening this week, the article notes that hundreds of municipalities have banned or restricted cannabis businesses, which jeopardizes the state’s social equity goals. The article discussed the narrow playing field for individuals and businesses looking to file applications with the State to operate cannabis businesses.
Ryan noted that, while New Jersey’s cannabis market is supposed to be about equity and accessibility, larger corporate entities may be willing to pay above market to advance their license application. “Unfortunately it’s likely the small businesses that are going to get priced out of the space due to the way that this process tends to play out,” Ryan said.
