Following a months-long dispute between the Trump administration and AI firm Anthropic, there appear to be signs of a potential resolution as the company prepares to go public.
Earlier this year, Anthropic refused to allow the US military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons systems. In response, the government placed the company on a national security blacklist and designated it a “supply-chain risk,” a measure expected to take effect later this year.
Although Anthropic leadership visited the White House in April to discuss the relationship, the company continues to challenge the supply-chain risk designation in court.
McCarter & English partner Franklin Turner spoke to Reuters and said that the Department of Defense is still “vigorously” defending itself against Anthropic’s lawsuit, and any broader damage to the company’s business is unlikely to ease until the department’s dispute with the company is resolved.
“Anytime the government signals that it’s washing its hands of a company, that’s a major problem for that company,” Turner said.
