McCarter & English LLP picked up the former director of compliance at the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission, Stephanie Olivo, as a special counsel this week, bringing experience enforcing rules around campaign contributions and other issues.
Stephanie Olivo has joined the firm after 10 years at ELEC, the state’s election transparency watchdog, according to a Tuesday announcement from the firm.
“I’m hoping to take that level of expertise that I gained over the past 10 years and the accessibility that I provided to the regulated community and the public to the clients of McCarter,” Olivo said in an interview with Law360 Pulse on Tuesday.
Olivo oversaw New Jersey’s compliance programs around the filing and reporting of campaign contributions, disclosures by companies holding government contracts and reporting by legislative agents, according to McCarter & English. She also created policies for legislative and regulatory education and provided legal advice to ELEC’s executive director.
In her new role, Olivo will advise corporate clients on campaign finance, political contributions, PAC activities, reporting requirements and pay-to-play laws, McCarter & English said. She will work out of the firm’s New Jersey offices, in Trenton and Newark, and in Philadelphia.
“I’d love to get involved in the political process, the civic process, including campaign financing and certain political activities,” Olivo said. “I intend to keep up on the pay-to-play laws and reporting and registration requirements and assist clients in that regard.”
