McCarter & English Pro Bono Fellowship for the City of Newark

To further McCarter & English’s commitment to providing pro bono services to Newark residents in need, the Firm has created a new full time Pro Bono Fellowship position.  We invite qualified individuals to apply for the McCarter & English Pro Bono Fellowship for the City of Newark.  The Fellow will be a key member of the Firm’s thriving pro bono program in Newark, reporting directly to the Pro Bono Director and the Newark Office Managing Partner, and working closely with members of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee.

The Fellowship will focus on the rights and unmet legal needs of low-income tenants in Newark.  The Fellow will use a variety of advocacy strategies to assist individuals facing eviction and/or living in substandard housing.  It is expected that the Fellow will, at a minimum:  represent tenants in housing court; speak publicly on issues related to housing rights; author articles on housing issues facing Newark or New Jersey; conduct know-your-rights presentations; and train and partner with the Firm’s lawyers to provide pro bono services to low-income tenants in Newark in a variety of settings.  The Fellow will work closely with community stakeholders and will have the opportunity to develop and implement new programs. 

The Fellow will receive a competitive public interest salary, commensurate with experience, with the benefits that are available to Firm Associates.  The Fellow will be fully integrated into the Firm community, able to benefit from trainings, social interactions, and other opportunities available to associates.

Qualifications

The Fellow should be a motivated, public interest oriented lawyer who is committed to social justice and interested in addressing legal issues both in court and by attempting to influence public opinion through speaking and writing opportunities.  The ideal candidate will have at least four years of experience, with at least two years of experience representing tenants in eviction defense proceedings in New Jersey, and a strong connection and commitment to the City of Newark.  Strong interpersonal skills, an interest in participating in speaking opportunities and writing for legal and general interest publications on social justice issues, and the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of audiences are necessary.  Fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in Newark is preferred.
