Basil's technical background and prior experience as in-house patent counsel help to shape his patent strategies for clients of all sizes.

Basil Krikelis’ practice is directed to representation of clients in all phases of intellectual property, with particular emphasis on patent procurement, strategic development and management of worldwide patent portfolios, Freedom-to-Operate and IP landscape analysis, IP Due Diligence reviews, licensing and other technical transactions, and complex intellectual property dispute/litigation support. While Basil represents clients in a variety of technological spaces, his practice is primarily focused in the life sciences and/or chemical space, including representation of fortune 500 biopharmaceutical companies, start-up and emerging growth life sciences companies, as well as universities and university spin-outs in all technologies. In Basil’s 25 years of practice he has worked in the field of immunotherapies, gene therapy and CRISPR, recombinant proteins, small molecules, drug delivery, personalized medicine, diagnostics, polymer chemistry, formulations, medical devices, hydrogels, agricultural and animal biosciences, personal care, cosmetics, food, flavorings, and industrial chemicals. Basil is routinely sought out by client’s for his intellectual property expertise in these areas.

Basil continues to draw on his years serving as chief patent counsel for a substantial Ag-Biotech research and development company to better advise his clients on patent filing strategies such as scope of filing, life cycle management, building patent “picket fences,” and international patent filing, as well as developing innovative approaches to identifying business opportunities and generating income from intellectual property.

Before practicing law, Basil worked for three years in a research lab as a molecular biologist for the DuPont Company and the later formed joint venture of DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Company.

Fortune 500 biopharmaceutical company—Provide strategic support for Hatch-Waxman litigation on billion dollar drug

Develop strategies for leveraging patent portfolio to address Hatch Waxman litigation issues associated with billion dollar small molecule drug in the psoriasis space.

Gene therapy research division of mid-atlantic non-profit hospital system—Develop patent strategy

Development of patent strategy and conduct FTO clearance for gene therapy product for treatment of small cell lung cancer.

Development stage biotech product for Fortune 500 biopharmaceutical company—Life cycle management patent portfolio development

Create life cycle management patent portfolio strategy for protein fusion therapeutic in the autoimmune space, complete FTO and patentability analysis, and develop and manage patent portfolio.

Development-stage biotechnology company—Patent portfolio management

Represent Fortune 500 biopharmaceutical company in various matters, including leading the IP due diligence, Freedom to Operate (FTO) analysis, and patentability analysis for two biotech-based company acquisitions valued at $350 million and $400 million respectively.  Continue to develop and manage the patent portfolio for each of these two acquisitions, including on-going FTO and patentability analysis, as well as development of overall life cycle management strategies. 

California-based pharmaceutical company—Patent analysis and litigation support

Conducted patent analysis and handled strategic litigation support for a commercial dispute in connection with ocular therapy.

Startup accelerator for university-created technologies—FTO and patentability analysis

Conducted FTO and patentability analysis of gene therapy technology on behalf of this startup accelerator. 

University technology commercialization center—Patent portfolio management

Developed the patent strategy in connection with tissue engineering technology for a university technology commercialization center and assisted with building out its patent portfolio.
