David R. Burns has practiced intellectual property law for almost 20 years following a successful career of more than 12 years as an Electrical Engineer at Raytheon Company. As an engineer, he worked primarily in the areas of signal processing and radar system integration and was involved in the development, design, and manufacture of the principal phased array antenna for the IRIDIUM constellation of communication satellites.
David is experienced in patent prosecution, trademark registration, due diligence, patentability, validity, infringement, and non-infringement matters for U.S. and international clients, which include start ups, emerging growth companies, and Fortune 500 companies. His practice focuses on the strategic development, protection and management of patent portfolios for clients. David manages and has managed a number of patent portfolios including portfolios having over 400 issued U.S. and international patents.
As a patent attorney David practices in a wide area of technologies. As of late, his practice has focused on advising clients on and securing patents on cutting edge technologies involving artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cybersecurity, block chain, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), as well as detection and identification of hidden contraband.
Additionally, David assists clients in managing and securing patents in the areas of medical device technology, including syringes, on body delivery systems, automatic injection devices, surgical instruments, thoracic drainage devices, optical coherence tomography devices, cytometry devices, and imaging devices.
In the high technology realm, David assists clients in managing and securing patents in the areas of optical electronics, microprocessor architecture and circuitry, electromagnetics, engine control systems, biometrics, telecommunication architectures and devices, fuel cells, solar cells, analog devices, and semiconductor fabrication.
