For the fifth time, Law360 selected McCarter & English as a NJ Powerhouse. Law360 Powerhouses are firms recognized as handling some of the biggest deals and most high-profile litigation in the region. Deputy Managing Partner Mary Gabriel attributes the firm’s success to doing complex work for sophisticated clients and securing the best talent in the market.
During the past year, the firm managed high-profile PFAS-related litigation in the state and nationally, closed one of the largest real estate transactions in New Jersey ($346 million acquisition of the Merrill Lynch Building in Jersey City, NJ), and grew its government affairs practice while statewide lobbying spending decreased. The firm expanded its Cannabis Group, handled complex corporate transactions (including helping two privately held companies go public through de-SPAC transactions), and negotiated vital contracts in the transportation, logistics, and supply chain management sector. Our lawyers also advanced important legal doctrines through multiple amicus filings, including two that outlined arguments largely adopted by the courts: one at the US Supreme Court in New York v. New Jersey, in which New Jersey was allowed to exit a joint NY-NJ policing agency under state sovereignty and contract law grounds, and another at the New Jersey Appellate Division in a case of first impression concerning insurance recovery for cyber losses (Merck & Co. v. ACE American Insurance Company).
The firm also advanced its commitment to pro bono, social justice, and diversity, and equity inclusion initiatives, by supporting entrepreneurs, non-profits, small businesses, and underrepresented groups such as immigrants and transgender individuals.
