Ms. Betz concentrates on policyholder insurance coverage, broker malpractice actions, and environmental matters.  Her work spans counseling and litigation in both state and federal courts, as well as international arbitrations.  Ms. Betz counsels clients on the structuring of their insurance programs and works with clients to negotiate the terms of new and renewal policies to ensure favorable terms that may avoid pitfalls in the event of a claim.  Ms. Betz’s environmental work includes the representation of companies involved in Superfund sites and in NRD cases.  She has assisted in defending such claims and in structuring creative settlements.

As part of a team, Ms. Betz successfully helped recover millions of dollars for a major pharmaceutical company's product liability losses disputed in international arbitration involving Bermuda Form insurance.  Ms. Betz also assisted a client in settling an insurance claim under a professional services liability policy that allowed the policyholder attorney to avoid facing trial on the underlying malpractice claim.  She also aided in obtaining an anti-suit injunction in Oregon temporarily precluding insurance carriers from litigating claims in California.  Ms. Betz regularly works with clients to reach a resolution with their carriers outside litigation or before trial.

On the environmental side of her practice, Ms. Betz represents clients in connection with the multi-party litigation involving the Passaic River and in allocation proceedings concerning the Portland Harbor Superfund site.  Ms. Betz has been involved in litigating and settling several substantial groundwater NRD cases in New Jersey, involving claims for hundreds of acres for replacement resource services. Recently, Ms. Betz was involved in the defense and successful resolution of cost recovery action in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She has worked with technical consultants on such things as hydrodynamic and groundwater modeling and with economists in connection with valuing alleged natural resource damages.

Because of her practical knowledge of New Jersey’s Courts, Ms. Betz is often sought out as local counsel for matters including Hatch-Waxman litigation, toxic tort actions and other types of litigation. Working in tandem with out-of-state lead counsel, Ms. Betz provides support and guidance as needed to successfully navigate the New Jersey Courts.  Ms. Betz also commits time to pro bono efforts and recently secured a temporary restraining order in the District of New Jersey for a client facing eviction after she sought a reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Act.  Following the TRO, the client’s landlord readily agreed to a settlement in the client’s favor.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Betz clerked for the Honorable Stanley R. Chesler, United States District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey.  She has been recognized as a New Jersey Rising Star in 2009-2014. Super Lawyers is published by Thomson Reuters.
