Yesterday’s indictment of the NYC Mayor for allegedly receiving foreign campaign contributions is a good reminder that officials and candidates need to know what is prohibited before taking contributions. Federal and state laws vary on acceptable types and amounts of contributions in this area, but one clear provision that spans across federal and state jurisdictions and applies to federal, state, and local elections is the prohibition of accepting contributions from foreign nationals.
